What to expect in your first Muay Thai class

If you've never thrown a punch in your life, your first Muay Thai class can feel intimidating. Don't worry — every coach was a beginner once, and beginner-class structure is built around exactly your situation.

A typical beginner Muay Thai session at Fitcom looks like this:

  • 10-min warm-up — light cardio, joint mobility, dynamic stretches
  • 15-min technique — stance, basic punches (jab, cross), basic kicks (push kick, roundhouse), the eight weapons concept
  • 20-min pad work or shadow — technique applied with a coach holding pads, or shadow drills if numbers are tight
  • 10-min conditioning — burpees, push-ups, core — the part that earns you the post-session shower
  • 5-min cool-down — stretch, breath, leave better than you arrived

You will not spar in your first class. You will not spar in your first month. Sparring only happens when the coach decides you're ready, with someone matched to your level.

What to wear and bring

You don't need much. To start:

  • Comfortable training clothes — shorts and a t-shirt are perfect
  • Bare feet or grippy training socks (no shoes on the mat)
  • A water bottle, you'll need it
  • A small towel

For your second or third class, get hand wraps (sold at the studio for around RM 30–50). Boxing gloves can be borrowed for the first month, then you'll want your own pair (RM 200–400 for a good starter pair).

Common fears beginners share — and the truth

"I'm not fit enough yet." Muay Thai builds fitness; you don't need fitness to start. The first few weeks are the gateway — by week four you'll be visibly fitter.

"I don't want to get hit in the face." Beginners don't spar. Pad work, bag work, and shadow drills are the entire first phase. Sparring is opt-in, supervised, and only when the coach signs off.

"Everyone else will be too good." Beginner class is exactly that — beginners. Mixed-level classes pair you with appropriate partners.

"I'll embarrass myself." You'll throw the wrong kind of kick on day one. So did everyone else. The coach has seen it 5,000 times. They'll fix it cheerfully.

How to start Muay Thai in Malacca

The simplest path:

  1. Book a free trial at Muay Thai & Kickboxing Melaka. One class, no commitment.
  2. Decide if you want the 4-week beginner intro — this is a structured pure-beginner block before you join the regular class.
  3. Move into the regular class — once your basics are solid, you join the full mixed-level community.

From there, it depends on what you want. Some members stay at fitness/technique level forever. Some compete. The path opens once you're in the door.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any experience to start Muay Thai?
No. Our beginner class is designed for people with zero martial arts experience. You'll learn stance, basic punches, and basic kicks before anything else.
How long until I can spar?
Most beginners are ready for their first light sparring after 2–3 months of consistent training, but only when the coach signs off. There is no pressure to spar.
Will Muay Thai help me lose weight?
Yes — a typical Muay Thai class burns 500–800 calories. Combined with consistent attendance and basic nutrition, it's a very effective fat-loss tool.
Is Muay Thai safe?
When taught well, yes. We control intensity, partner-match carefully, and supervise every session. Like any contact sport, the skill of the coach is the safety system.
Can women do Muay Thai?
Absolutely. Many of our most committed members are women. The class is mixed and the energy is supportive, not macho.
How much does Muay Thai cost at Fitcom?
Beginner intro (4 weeks) is priced separately from the regular class membership. Free trial first — book via the contact page.
Do I need to be young or flexible?
No. We coach adults of every age and flexibility level. We start with what your body can do today and build from there.
